What is NeuroKinetic Therapy®?

NeuroKinetic Therapy® is an efficient way to evaluate movement problems, and guide exercise and rehabilitation.  We look at how your entire body moves and functions to figure out why things hurt or don’t work as well as they should.   We can use it to evaluate many types of problems, including low back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, shoulder problems, and other injuries. 

How does What is NeuroKinetic Therapy® work?

NKT is an excellent adjunct to your Chiropractic care. It is based on the science of motor control, which states that the motor control center in the brain stores all the movement and coordination patterns of the body. It not only creates healthy movement patterns (such as when a baby learns to stand), but also substitute movement patterns when we are injured.

For example, if you sprain your left ankle, your brain will shift weight off of that injury to the other foot. This will affect how the rest of your body – your knees, hips, core, neck, shoulders – move as you walk. The injured ankle may eventually feel better, but may still remain unstable, so your brain and body will hold on to those other “protective patterns”. Then, “for no reason” weeks, months, or even years later, you develop pain, strain, or inflammation elsewhere.

The usual approach is to try to strengthen, stretch, or otherwise “fix” the painful area, when in reality it has been overstressed by the ankle injury not healing correctly or working properly. The NeuroKinetic Therapy approach gives us a way to test these functional relationships and identify the underlying problem. Along with specific Chiropractic adjustments and corrective exercises, your nervous system can re-learn proper movement and function so you can heal.

NeuroKinetic Therapy® helps those with:

  • A history of multiple injuries, chronic injuries, or recurring injuries
  • Surgeries or scars of any kind – scars, even seemingly small ones, can cause serious neuromuscular dysfunction and pain. This includes old bone fractures.
  • “-Itises” – Tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, myofasciitis —  joints, ligaments, tendons, and bursae can all become inflamed when they are continually irritated and strained by improper movement.
  • Muscles that are “always tight” (shoulders and hamstrings, anyone?) – these are often overworking for other weak muscles. Your brain will never allow them to stretch and “relax” if they are the only ones working to keep you moving or standing upright!
  • Even with chronic pain and injuries, by understanding your unique health history we can start to “peel the onion” to get to the source of the problem. As long as you are alive, you have the ability to heal!
