Backpacks and Back Pain: Pediatric Chiropractic Advice

With the school year now in full swing, and the cooler weather fast approaching, now's a good time to check in with your child and make sure his or her back is feeling good. Frederick chiropractor Dr. Deborah Morrone treats acute and chronic conditions in children, teens, and young adults, and helps educate parents on how to maximize spinal health for the whole family.

5 Tips for Backpack & Back Safety

If your child is complaining of back pain, it could be her backpack that is contributing to her symptoms. Here are 5 ways to make sure that your child is packing and carrying her bag appropriately:

  1. Don't over pack! Your child should be carrying no more than 15% of his or her body weight. You may want to talk to your child's teachers about whether they can leave certain heavy textbooks at home vs. at school, or consider photocopying necessary pages.
  2. Use both straps. Sure, that one strap slung over the shoulder look may seem "cool," but this type of asymmetrical load can really strain the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints within your child's spine and shoulders.
  3. Make sure the straps are thick and padded. This helps evenly distribute pressure on your child's shoulder muscles and helps minimize the chances of straps being engaged too tightly.
  4. Get a bag that has multiple compartments. This helps evenly distribute weight within your child's bag and makes it easier for him to find what he needs.
  5. Pack heavier items on the bottom of the bag, closest to the child's back. This improves the body mechanics and reduces the relative load that's imposed through your child's spine.

Talking to your child about making these changes can help her avoid backaches throughout the school year. Our Frederick chiropractor is also able to evaluate and treat your child's back pain and refer to other healthcare professionals as necessary. Pediatric chiro care is safe for children of all ages, making our service valuable and effective for the whole family.

Testimonials

I found Dr. Morrone to be very pleasant and I find her approach refreshing. Other chiropractors I have visited basically give you an adjustment without discussing the neurological connections. Looking forward to working with her and also to see how she may be able to help my daughter.
